What are the recommendations for our consumption of added sugars?

It is recommended not to exceed 50 grams of added sugars per day for a partially active adult, which accounts for 10% of total energy intake.

This recommendation varies according to energy requirements. The recommended maximum limit is higher for people who do a lot of physical activity and lower for inactive individuals:

  • Max. 45 grams for an inactive adult
  • Max. 50 grams for a partially active adult
  • Max. 60 grams for a moderatly active adult
  • Max. 70 grams for a highly active adult

According to the Swiss Pediatric Society, added sugars should be avoided for children under the age of 3. Up to the age of 12, intake of added sugars should not exceed 5% of total energy intake, or around 25 grams.
